Persia and Turkey in Revolt Classic Reprint David Fraser 9781334335129 Books

This book describes the unsettled political and economic situations in Persia and Turkey at the beginning of the 20th century and the search for peace and stability in both countries. In addition, the author also takes the reader on an extensive tour of the geography, archeology and culture of the region between the two states.

In Persia, we find a country troubled by a low standard of living and suffering from lack of amenities and basic necessities: mud houses, unpaved streets, absence of water and drainage systems, highway robberies as well as overall endemic corruption were typical . To add insult to injury the political situation was critical adding more misery to an already impoverished population. The government was in a mess and the cry was for a constitution. The players included the old Shah, the nationalists ,the mullahs and other interested groups. To add to the confusion two foreign legations, the British and the Russian, were there each seeking to maximise its position. When the constitution was finally endorsed the government proved to be inept as it turned out to be totally bankrupt and without foreign support.

In Turkey, we find the Ottoman Empire in a grave situation being resented from Arabia to Albania. Fights against all occupied areas were frequent; the government was in a continuous struggle with the Arabs, the Druse, the Yemenis, the Albanians and the Greeks. In addition, the internal system of government was in shambles. Proper administration was hampered by corruption and mismanagement. To correct deficiencies the government needed funds which were not available. Foreign aid was denied. Under these circumstances it is no wonder that the new Young Turk party was able to win the revolution and seize control from the Sultan Abdul Hamid. Once they were in command signs of development and progress became evident to the Turkish people and to Europe in general, but the road ahead was long.

Although the reader gets the impression that the book is mainly about the two revolts in the title, the reader is surprised to be taken on a tour by the author into the geography and archeology of the region from Persia to Turkey. Far from being a minor section this part actually occupies more than half the book ! Old cities like Babylon, Palmyra,Karbala, Isfahan, Bagdad and others are described in depth with emphasis on the native people and their culture. All this is highly interesting especially when we realise that travel at the time was mainly on horses and mules and hardly immune from highway robbers. However, in spite of all this, the reader is left wondering about the relevance of all this to the main subject .
